Cut or break apart the rhizome, making sure each section has at least one eye. Let the rhizomes dry for a day to form a callus over the cut before replanting. If you live in an area cooler than USDA plant hardiness zones 8 through 10, you’ll have to store the rhizomes and replant them in the spring.
Zantedeschia 'Garnet Glow' has showy hot-pink flowers above bright green leaves. Zantedeschia 'Ice Dancer' bears pure white flowers above silver-splashed bright green leaves. Zantedeschia 'Odessa' has almost black flowers that make a striking contrast to the silver-flecked foliage.
Under-watering symptoms include a weakened stem accompanied by a loss of flowers, stunted growth and the greying or yellowing of leaves - these issues are commonly down to forgetfulness or too much heat or sunlight.
It is easy to grow calla lilies. These plants do not generally require too much attention. Care of calla lilies requires that they be planted in loose, well-drained soil. They prefer to be located in full sun or partial shade in warmer climates.
Over-watering symptoms include yellowing of leaves, wilting, basal collapse, and plant death; these issues are commonly due to an area that's too dark, excess moisture in the soil, a too water-retentive compost or water-logging.
Some Calla Lilies (e.g. Zantedeschia aethiopica) can be grown in water up to 12 in. deep (30 cm).
First of all, Zantedeschia aethiopica is not capable of self fertilizing, it requires two different plants to form a viable offspring. The female part of the plant is the ovary and the male contribution is the anthers. At this point the plant is immature and Read more
If the leaf tips of your calla lily are turning brown, you may be watering too much. Brown leaf tips may signal excessive fertilizer.
Ideally, keep compost moist but take care not to over-water either. Once flowering shoots of calla lily appear, feed every three to four weeks with a liquid fertilizer high in potash, such as liquid tomato fertilizer. Regularly remove dead and faded flower stems and leaves.
Spreng. Many plants in this family are poisonous raw, due to the presence of calcium oxylate crystals. If eaten raw, this toxin gives you a sensation as if hundreds of tiny needles are sticking into the mouth, tongue etc.
While bugs don't have much of an impact on Zantedeschia aethiopica, they can encounter soft rot which can cause them to wilt and die. Once the Zantedeschia aethiopica plant is infected with a soft rot, it is prone to an attack by Erwinia. Erwinia is Read more
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks until the flowers have faded. Mulch annually in fall with well rotted garden compost or manure. Remove the flower stems after the blooms have faded. Zantedeschia makes excellent cut flowers and have one of the longest Read more
Zantedeschia grows to around 31.5 inches tall and has fleshy, turnip-like roots (rhizomes). The calla lily can reach stately heights with age and is therefore particularly suitable for large containers.
